hi-tech trash

High-Tech Trash by Chris Carroll

Imagine a life "wreathed in smoke" in a completely littered, deserted land "carrying armfuls of brightly colored computer wire" while the child next to you races to get "a tangle of copper wire off the old tire he's using for fuel". But I don't think you can envision that in your pretty, little, sheltered head. We live in a world where we can acquire any commodity we desire and when we're through with it, well... we toss it into the trash bin. And, if you didn't know, that expensive, once-cherished, piece of machinery ends up across the seas to never bother us or our lands again.

The places where our garbage goes are not prosperous places. If anything, we're probably making everything worse. The inhabitants of this land compete with one another to get the valuable portions of our trash to sell and, hopefully, make a dollar; a single dollar. Sickening.

Our junk releases chemicals and carcinogens into the field of waste the children of this land frolic in and all we're worrying about is when the contract on our phones will be up so we can get the new Blackberry. GET A GRIP! We're ruining their safety and health all for our personal gain.

Our philosophy:
"Get what's new, get the brand name, and ask your parents to fund it."

versus

Their philosophy:
"The key to making money is speed, not safety."

I think I'll leave it at that, but remember:
"You're all one race - the human race. Just a different smile for a different face." - RX Bandits
